From Church Choirs to Chart-Topping Hits

Growing up in Toronto’s Jane and Finch neighbourhood to Jamaican immigrant parents, Jully Black’s musical journey began in the vibrant atmosphere of her Pentecostal Christian household.

Singing from the tender age of six, she found early inspiration in gospel music. However, it was hearing the iconic Whitney Houston on the radio at just seven years old that sparked her fascination with pop music. Black acknowledges Houston’s influence as foundational to her own musical aspirations, declaring, “Without Whitney Houston, there is no Jully Black.”

By the age of 21, Black had embarked on a remarkable career trajectory, signing with Warner/Chappell Music. Her songwriting prowess quickly gained recognition, with credits including compositions for renowned artists such as Destiny’s Child, Nas, and Missy Elliot.

Facts Don’t Care About Your Feelings

In February 2023, Jully Black made headlines for her poignant rendition of Canada’s national anthem, O’ Canada, at the NBA All-Star game.

Amidst revelations of unmarked graves at former residential schools, Black made a subtle yet powerful alteration to the anthem’s lyrics, exchanging “our home and native land” for “our home on native land.” This change, she explained, was a conscious acknowledgment of Indigenous people’s presence on the land predating European settlement.

Reflecting on her decision, Black emphasized the importance of singing “the facts” and recognizing Indigenous sovereignty over the land. Her gesture underscored a deep commitment to truth and reconciliation, resonating far beyond the confines of the basketball arena.

Giving Jully Her Flowers

In recognition of her contributions to music and culture, Jully Black was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2021. Revered as “Canada’s Queen of R&B,” she has received numerous accolades, including a Juno Award and multiple nominations.

CBC Music hailed her as one of the 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever, celebrating her soulful voice reminiscent of legends like Tina Turner and Amy Winehouse

Throughout her career, Black’s impact has extended beyond her solo work, encompassing collaborations and contributions to Toronto’s vibrant hip-hop and R&B scene. Her independent releases garnered critical acclaim, with nominations at prestigious awards such as the Junes and MuchMusic Video Awards.

Celebrating a Legacy of Resilience
